A WELCOME TO THE TERRITORIES

Our Journey and Commitment to Truth and Reconciliation

This year, our TRC exploration will center around the idea of 'Living Our Land Acknowledgements.' The questions we will ask ourselves in this work will be, "how do we go beyond the words spoken in the land acknowledgments we give and what does that look like?" We believe, as a system, that we also need to look at the other side of an acknowledgement and that is the viewpoint of the First Nations who's land we are exist on. We must first ask, "are we welcomed?" The Indigenous Education Council (IEC) has been working on a Traditional Welcome project that is coming to life creatively through the infusion of local Indigenous languages, with the help from local Knowledge holders, and leveraging both QR and AR technology. We are proud of the work we have done collaboratively to get to this point. At the front of every building in the district we have an interactive territorial acknowledgement poster that invites you into these spaces and on to the territory that the buildings exist on. This is a step towards Reconciliation.

Please see the map below to locate and experience the Traditional Welcomes nearest to you.

Most importantly, we would like to thank the Elders, Knowledge Holders, Language Speakers and their respective Nations for this opportunity. May we always be deserving of this welcome address. We value the relationships that have created this opportunity.
